Your "Cheat Sheet" on how to travel by train in Europe

Where to book your seats?

Are first class tickets worth their price?

When you buy a Eurail train ticket online, my advice is to always book first class. The difference in price is around 30% more expensive, but the difference in comfort and service is 100%.

Europe's most busy train route is London to Paris aboard the world famous train: the Eurostar. Leaving London Waterloo Station (soon to be transferred to St Pancrace) and arriving at Paris Gare du Nord
2 hours and 35 minutes, the Eurostar is quite an experience, traveling at such high speeds with a stint under the sea.

No train (and very few other modes of transportation, for that matter) can match Eurostar's standards for quality of service. Eurostar provides you with everything you need to make your trip a relaxing journey.

Each train has up to 15 attendants, recognizable by their Eurostar uniforms, which were created by French designer Balmain. The attendants are specially hired and trained for catering to your every
need on board Eurostar. And all are fluent in English.

Three kinds of seating are available: Business Premier, Leisure Select and Standard class.

All Eurostar trains are nonsmoking.

Top 10 train routes in Europe

Below you will find the most requested train routes in Europe.
Click on each link to go directly to the ticketing engine for that itinerary.
Remember to target a price during the weekday (especially on the London-Paris route).
First class is a must if you have a lot of luggage and appreciate comfort.

LONDON-PARIS Forget the plane! It takes hours to get out there, and takes one hour from Heathrow to the West End. Standsted is even more far away. Then you have to deal with CDG airport on the French side too... Eurostar is way easier then flying. No lost luggage. No taxi transfer to the city center.

LONDON-BRUSSELS Your Eurostar ticket will take you to Brussels Midi/Zuid.
From there the trams offer the best way to get around Brussels.

AMSTERDAM-PARIS- BRUSSELS-PARIS Also known as the “Red Train”,
Thalys links Paris to Brussels, Cologne, Dusseldorf and Amsterdam.
There are 18 Thalys trains per day. First Class: Meal included at your seat and welcome drink.

FLORENCE-ROME - FLORENCE-VENICE - ROME-VENICE Train is by far the best way to travel in Italy. It is easy, comfortable, relatively cheap and fast. From Florence to Rome it's 1.5 hours by train, and at least 3 hours by car (without any traffic problems) and once you arrive, cars are a burden in any city center.

BARCELONA-PARIS Also know as the “Talgo Night”, these hotel trains give a new dimension to travel. Journeys throughout Spain are a breeze on Train Hotel Elipsos with service to Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Milan, and Zurich. Hotel trains are designed especially for night travel.
There is a range of accommodation offered to suit every traveler's needs,
from "Gran Class" Sleepers offering cabins with a washbasin and shower to super reclining seats.

NICE-PARIS Holding the world speed record at 320 mph,the TGV wastes no time in getting you to your destination. The TGV is the cornerstone of the European high-speed rail network. Reservations are required on this train.

LONDON - EDINBURGH Departing from Kings Cross Station
enjoy the English and Scottish countryside during the 4 1/2 hr ride.

All trains have overhead luggage racks for small items (briefcases and day-packs),
some spaces between seat backs and at the end of the carriages for there are full height
luggage racks for larger items. Be prepared to lift your case up to shoulder height to reach
the higher shelves on these racks. Two smaller cases may be more easily managed than a large piece. Trolleys are usually easily available (for a deposit) on the platforms. And outside the station, the taxi rank is well organized for incoming trains.
